In America, February is Black History Month. During the month white people do their best to try and apologize for the fact that they used to make black people stand on the bus and drink from the bad water fountains. We listen to rap music and pay special attention to Barack Obama. We thank George Washington Carver for all the things he did with the peanut. You would think that the celebration of Black History Month would pretty much bury the hatchet between the black and white race. However, it also seems to make some people question whether or not prejudice in America is still a problem. Isn't February the shortest month of the year? Of all the themed months, wouldn't you think the shortest is the least important? Isn't that kind of a slap in the face of the black man? It's not as though July is booked. July is listed as National Baked Beans Month. Do we really need thirty one days decidated to baked beans? Couldn't we shorten Baked Bean Month down to twenty eight days and give our black friends an extra three? We kind of own it to them. I was in class the other day, and we started talking about Black History Month. I wondered if anyone else felt the way I did and asked the following question: "Doesn't it piss anyone off that we give black history the shortest month possible?" I received this answer: "Well, there is an extra day in February this year." I guess that means it isn't the shortest month anymore. Maybe we haven't come as far as we thought.
