So I'm walking around campus the other day, and I see this flier posted that says "Free Anonymous HIV Testing." I stood for a moment and starred at the sign (while receiving some unpleasant looks from passersby). After a few minutes I shook my head and walked away.
I'm not sure how the hell this is possible. I get the free part, the university sets aside money to administer these tests. What I don't get, is the anonymous part. Anonymous means that you don't give your name, meaning they don't know who the results belong to. So when they get a positive result, they have no idea what to do with it. What do they tell the people who got tested?
"Dear sir/madam, thank you for participating in our testing. You may or may not have HIV. Have a nice day."
I called the medical center to get this all straightened out.
Medical Center - Thank you for calling the student health center, how can I help you?
Me - Hi. I saw that you are having anonymous HIV testing. How can you give results to anonymous people?
Medical Center - We know who the results belong to.
Me - So it isn't anonymous. So you're liars.
Medical Center - No, we...
Me - LIARS!
And I hung up. Maybe next time they'll think before they put up a flier containing blatant lie.
